In his thorough fourteen-page catalogue essay, Folland traces the development of art photography and the critical discourse it has been embedded in since the seventies. A wide range of concepts are brought including Rosalind Krauss's notion of index, C.S. Pierce's linguistic semiotics, Barthes' message without a code, Foucault's theories of discursive practice, Althusser's Ideological States Apparatus, etc. The four works which constitute the exhibition are analysed in detail in the light of this critical context. 24 bibl. ref.
