APPLICATION LIMITS FOR PROPELLERS AT HIGH SPEEDS

TL;DRAbstract

The design of propellers for high ship speeds is difficult because of the large power demand. For limited propeller diameter and given ship speed, the maximum power limit is set by the point of thrust breakdown which depends on the cavitation number. For controllable pitch and to a lesser extent for fixed pitch propellers at high speeds blade root cavitation can not be avoided. Other particular design aspects are discussed and illustrated with examples.
