American homes account for one-fifth of the total energy consumption in the United States. A consumption compilation for major and minor energy users in the typical home has been prepared. This compilation lists the energy consumption in kWh, Btu primary energy, barrels of crude oil equivalent, and cubic feet of natural gas equivalent. The typical American home of 1500 square feet and a family of four persons consumes about 300 million Btu primary energy per year or 8.2 x 10/sup 5/ Btu/day. Home heating and cooling, water heating, and refrigeration of foods account for 80 percent of home energy use. Living habits of the residents is one of the most important factors in determining home energy consumption. The ultimate impact of increased energy cost on these habits will be decided by the individual. (From Summary)
