Prevalência de doença periodontal em gestantes e sua associação com parto prematuro e baixo peso ao nascer em maternidades públicas de Manaus

The inflammatory reaction caused by periodontal disease has been associated with the increase risk for preterm deliveries and low birthweight, the major cause of newly-born mortality and morbidity.The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of periodontal disease in a pregnant population and the factors that may influence the occurrence of preterm deliveries and /or the birth of low birthweight babies.This study included 390 pregnant women who were undergoing prenatal care in two Manaus maternities, state of Amazonas, Brazil.In order to obtain the data, a socio-demographic report was applied followed by a periodontal exam which included the clinical parameters of bleeding index, probing depth (PD) and clinical attatchment level (CAL).Six sites per tooth were examined all over the mouth, excluding third molars.Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the factors "presence of gingival inflammation" increased 2.57 (IC 95% 0,98 -6,73, p=0,0540), and "less than 6 pre
