Constructing an Expert System for Data Analysis by Working Examples

16

TL;DRAbstract

Our experience in building an expert system for regression analysis (REX) convinced us that acquiring statistical knowledge (strategy) empirically by working examples and keeping diaries is a useful endeavor. However, we realized that statisticians need tools to aid them in developing strategy in a systematic and rigorous fashion, and encoding strategy into software for general use. This paper expands the motivating ideas listed above for building such a system and outlines our design plans for doing it. We named the new system “Student” as it is designed to learn data analysis techniques from an experienced statistician (teacher) by observing how actual analyses are done and by asking questions.
