TL;DRAbstract

With the aid of gauges of deformation placed on the periphery of the tibial pyramid at the level of the submeniscal bone, the authors explored the behavior of the bony tissue under increased weight bearing by the joint according to whether the menisci are retained or not. This study shows that the menisci, the stabilizing role of which is already well known, act also as a factor in the transmission of stresses. This property is demonstrated by an appreciable fall in the force required to deform the submeniscal bone after removal of the menisci. The authors remark that the osteophytosis that develops after meniscectomy affects precisely the zones characterized on the experimental set up by the abnormal lowering of the level of the bony deformations.
