Taste Preference in Cats is Influenced by Physiological State
TL;DRAbstract
As in other mammals, domestic cats have specific taste preferences that can be influenced by macronutrient composition and physical characteristics of food as well as the presence or absence of specific taste imparting compounds (palatability enhancers). This study investigated the influence of changing physiological condition on food choice. The response variable in these experiments was food intake which was evaluated by the ratio of the test food to the total food consumed [grams test/(grams test+grams control)]. In this experiment 25 healthy cats and 12 cats with renal insufficiency were used to evaluate food preference by comparing two different control foods [Control Chicken (CC) and Control Pork (CP)] to two different foods designed to aid in the management of renal disease both with reduced phosphorus and protein in the food but with different ratios of phosphorus to protein in the palatability enhancer [Test Normal (TN) and Test reduced ratio (TRR)].
