Surveying and Recording of Nematodes of the Genus Bursaphelenchus in Conifer Forests in Greece and Pathogenicity of the Most Important Species

22

TL;DRAbstract

Summary Between 1996 and 2001, surveys were carried out in Greece in order to record and determine the Bursaphelenchus fauna on conifers. This was done in the framework of three projects, namely: i) FAIR 1CT 95-0083; ii) Directive 2000 of the EU; and iii) a bilateral project with Bulgaria. Altogether 364 wood samples from all over Greece were investigated for the presence of Bursaphelenchus nematodes. The pine wood nematode B. xylophilus was not found. The species isolated were: Bursaphelenchus leoni, B. sexdentati, B. teratospicularis, B. eggersi, B. hellenicus and B. mucronatus. These were the first Bursaphelenchus surveys in Greece and all species constitute new records in this country. Attempts to rear the above nematodes in the laboratory have proved successful for B. leoni, B. sexdentati and B. hellenicus. This was done in Petri dishes on Botrytis cinerea cultures for further checking of their pathogenicity by inoculation tests on 3-year-old seedlings of P. brutia, P. halepensis,
