TL;DRAbstract

The Computer Family Architecture (CFA) Selection Committee was formed to evaluate computer architecture candidates for the purpose of selecting one as the basis for a family of software-compatible military computers. The military spends billions yearly for developing computer systems for tactical and strategic applications. The proliferation of incompatible computer instruction sets aggravates the problems of software development maintenance, documentation and training. A demonstrated approach to mitigating this problem is for the military to adopt a well-known, proven instruction-set architecture which can be implemented in advanced technologies as a family of software-compatible computers. Important benefits of this approach include open competition among military computer vendors to build CFA computers using their own hardware production techniques and the availability of a large, mature set of software development tools and associated programmer expertise. In pursuit of the CFA goa
