BARGE CARRYING SYSTEMS-THE STATE OF THE ART

TL;DRAbstract

Several different types of barges and BCV's are presently operation, each of which have different physical characteristics and handling techniques. These are LASH, SeaBee, Bacat and the USSR concept known as the Valmet system. Other new concepts described this paper are (i) Bacat 2, which is a larger version of Bacat 1; (ii) Trimariner of Oceanlift, which is designed to handle very large barges for long haul deep sea voyages; (iii) Capricorn, which is a dual purpose combination ro/ro and barge carrier; (iv) European Barge Carrier System (Blohm & Voss of Hamburg), which is based on four different barge modules, the size of which is related to the stowage area a ship required by a given number of containers; (v) Thyssen (Thyssen Nordseewerke GmbH), which is a concept for a closed BCV to carry 24 LASH barges; (vi) Podule (Curnow Shipping Ltd. and Burness Corlett and Partners), which meets the needs of their own in house requirements rather than introducing a new concept on the world marke
