TL;DRAbstract
Composite and hybrid metal/composite structures are nowadays present\nnot only in the aerospace industry, but thanks to continuous performance\nimprovement and cost reduction, also many more industrial fields are approaching\nthe use of multimaterial structural elements.\nThis requires, in turn, extensive use of adhesive bonding and a more\nand more sophisticated capability to simulate and predict the strength of\nbonded connections where, for this purpose, analytical methods are being\nprogressively integrated or replaced by finite element analysis (FEA). To\nensure the safety of the resulting structures, it is imperative to understand\ntheir fatigue behaviour. Thus the rise of the application of adhesive bonding\nhas gone hand in hand with the development of models capable to predict\nthe fatigue life that is related to the initiation and propagation of defects\nstarting at free edges of joining regions or other features, such as throughthickness\nholes.The cohesive zone model (CZM)
