TL;DRAbstract

This paper looks at some issues related to recreational use in a newly designated National Recreation Area: Grand Island, Michigan. The study was conducted over the course of eight weeks in the summer of 1991 by four students at the University of Michigan Biological Station. The purpose of the study was to assess the suitability of various sites on the island for recreation purposes. Our concern was to identify potential uses that would minimize ecological damage while providing high quality recreational, educational, and/or aesthetic experiences for users. In order to assess sites, the research team developed a recreational site index which was used on several trips to the island. After considering possible uses and limitations at each site, we make recommendations for management. Finally, we discuss some management considerations for the isalnd as a whole.
