A model to determine speed limits on two-lane rural roads on the national road network

0

TL;DRAbstract

The aim of speed limit policy on public roads is to meet the mobility needs (permeability and reducing travel times), as well as improving road safety and reducing negative environmental impacts. Speed limit on a particular road section must be such that is maintaining balance between the driver's reasonable perception of speed in a particular road environment, category and function of the road and the demands of people who live or work on the roadside. In Slovenia there is no uniform and comprehensive approach for determine the most appropriate speed limit on the road section, which would take into account all relevant factors (factors of setting speed limits depend on the selected approach). In this thesis we used and tested a model, which was developed in the Dutch study and was made for the Dutch motorway network. The procedure was adapted and applied to the national road network in the Republic of Slovenia and we developed a model to determine the most appropriate speed limit on a
