Recurring themes and issues in contemporary commercial Brazilian cinema

TL;DRAbstract

The purpose of this study is to explore what recurring themes and issues are being presented in contemporary commercial Brazilian cinema and why there is a need for these to be depicted on screen. I investigate what the similarities are between a range of contemporary commercial Brazilian films and argue that these films are attempting to expose ongoing issues within Brazilian society in an effort to force a reaction. I explore, using close textual analysis, how films from the 1990s to 2008 have depicted the struggles of the poor, looking particularly at broken families. The absent father also features heavily in these films and I suggest a link between this and a descent into crime culture. I then demonstrate how alternative family units are portrayed and suggest how this then has connotations of a positive future. The next chapter reveals how police are being conveyed in film and how they are associated with corruption and unnecessary violence. I analyse the way in which my case stud
