FINAL REPORT ON ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION BLOOD CELL SCANNER
TL;DRAbstract
The application of the television microscope scanner, scanner-computer link, and special purpose computer to the problem of imaging individual white blood cells, quantizing their images, storing same in cemputer memnory, and applying thereto the Golay shrink process is described. Approximately 100 white blood cells were selected as a weighted sample of the white cell population of peripheral blood. Using the shrink process, the CELLSCAN demonstrator was able to properly identify 92% of all granulocytes in this sample, 83% of the binucleate lymphocytes, and 5 of the 7 lymphocytes. The two monocytes selected were classified as grandulocytes. Methods for improving the accuracy of the CELLSCAN system by changes in sample preparatmon and in computer logic are described. A section giving the parameters of a practical laboratory instrument and possibilities for future development is also included. (auth)
