This thesis conducts a case study of preposition ”over” from a cognitive perspective within the relevant theoretical framework of image schema, metaphor and categorization, the goal of which is to find the internal structure as well as semantic extension mechanisms of polysemy. The theory of categorization and prototype provides the theoretical foundation for the polysemous structure. And the theory of image schema and metaphor are the motivation mechanisms of meaning extension.
