In this paper, we study Kummer’s work on Fermat’s last theorem and describe the contents of each of his papers on the subject. To better understand Kummer’s contribution and position in the mathematics of his time, we begin with a short biography, a succinct overview of his work and of his interplay and exchanges with other mathematicians.
