TL;DRAbstract

This thesis explores the view of history found in modern Chilean poetry by examining selected works of five Chilean poets. Based on the assumption that since the military overthrow of 1973 the Chilean treatment of their own history as well as of history in general has changed, this study begins with a discussion of recent tendencies of historiography and an explanation of the concept of "representation." Following that, an extensive in-depth analysis of several poems shows how the forced take over in government by Pinochet and the experience of life under a dictatorial military government have heavily influenced - among other things - content, composition, structure, and symbolism of Chilean poetry. Many Chilean poets disguised their poetical treatment of current events by writing about the past: the extinction of the Indian tribes of Tierra del Fuego, the occupation of the Isle of Chiloé by different groups, the wave of immigration of German settlers in the middle of the 19th century
