TL;DRAbstract

The aim of this study was to clarify various aspects of (problematic) game behavior among individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Several determinants regarding social interaction through internet or games seem to be predictors of problematic gaming behavior. Due to the problems this group has with social interaction, they are more susceptible to show problematic gaming behavior. Seven respondents were interviewed and afterwards the interviews were transcribed and coded. The main outcome of this study was that for most of the respondents playing games is used as a way to relax. For a number of respondents this may result in problematic behavior, while others experience little to no problems. The social component of gaming doesn’t seem to be the main reason for gaming. This study revealed numerous other reasons to play games, some of them appear to be associated with autism. Some of them seem to be new, as they aren’t described in prior literature.
