TL;DRAbstract
The thesis deals with short term cognitive processes that occur during the retrieval of verbal resp. nonverbal information from working memory. Particularly, it affects the question whether the available findings concerning topographical and dynamic characteristics of Baddeley's (1986) working memory components are valid for the retrieval period or not. In order to examine this question, Sternberg's (1966) item recognition task was chosen and combined with EEG recording. The EEG was analyzed by coherence analysis using a novel approach based on general adaptive principles and the adaptive fit of a bivariate linear model with time-varying parameters developed by Schack (1997). This method allows the estimation of coherence continuously in time so that the instantaneous coherence function becomes sensible for describing fast thinking processes.
