TL;DRAbstract

The present paper deduces Germ. Borretsch 'borage, Borago officinalis L.' via French and Catalan transmission from Maghr.Ar. (a)bu hurais 'Anchusa italica Retz., Italian Bugloss, Large Blue Alkanet' which is a term of a Boraginacea closely related to borage. In contrast to the prevalent opinion in the transmission of this popular form Medieval Latin doesn't play a part while Catalan and French play a fundamental role. The learned form Germ. Borrago however derives from Maghr.Ar. (a)bu hurais via Catalan and Medieval Latin. This view is supported by cultural history.
