Current trends, issues and dilemmas in performance related pay: cautious PRP believer or confirmed PRP sceptic?

TL;DRAbstract

This dissertation explores, examines and describes current trends, issues and dilemmas in individual Performance Related Pay (PRP). Data is generated through the construction of a self-administered questionnaire which is distributed to over 130 personnel practitioners and other managers with significant responsibilities for the management of people. The questionnaire design is informed through a distillation of issues which emanate from an extensive review of the PRP literature. The conceptual base of PRP is also evaluated. The survey is comprehensive in scope and elicits information on a wide range of topical PRP questions. These are explored not only from an organisational view point, but also from the perspective of PRP recipients. The analysis reveals the existence of considerable confusion about the objectives of PRP and there is evidence also of real doubts about the efficacy of PRP.
