TL;DRAbstract

The fabrication of UO/sub 2/by sintering, hot pressing, warm pressing, and direct swaging of the oxide powder in metal sheaths is discussed. The oxidation of UO/sub 2/ in air and in CO/sub 2/ and the compatibility of both stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric oxide in liquid sodium are considered. The preparation and fabrication of UC by various methods are discussed. Consideration is given to dispersed systems of these compounds, with particular reference to the fabrication and properties of carbides dispersed in graphite as high temperature fuels in gas-cooled reactors.
