This historical essay explores phenomenon of women enrolling in college in record numbers in America in the 1920s. College women of this decade played a critical role in the development of women’s rights and access to education. Additionally, by entering higher education, these college women helped change the social and political role of women in America. The landscape of the college campus transformed throughout the 1920s, and college women pushed the boundaries of acceptable behavior, from protesting strict dress code to entering into fields of study previously reserved for male students. In the process, the “college life” we recognize today was created in part by the women who chose to further their education and improve their lives with a college education.
