TL;DRAbstract

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is the name given to the protein precursor for both ß-endorphin and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH). Although the proof of a common precursor for these important peptides was provided by chemical evidence (1–3), the elucidation of the exact structure of POMC and the prediction of other biologically important peptides in the same precursor was one of the first major demonstrations of the power of recombinant-DNA techniques (4). Because POMC is a member of a growing class of proteins (5) whose expression is regulated in a tissue-specific manner, it may serve as a model for studying the expression of other neuropeptide precursors.
