TL;DRAbstract
Abstract : Perceptual memory refers to experience-induced changes in perceptual processing of particular objects or scenes. Part 1 of this report summarizes the results of 8 studies of the role of perceptual memory in recognition memory. The hypothesis was confirmed that perceptual memory-contributes to the feeling of familiarity that observers sometimes experience even when they lack explicit memory for previously encountered objects. Part 2 summarizes the results of 14 studies of a by-product of perceptual memory called novel popout. The theory was confirmed that novel popout arises from the automatic disinhibition of processing of objects that fail to match top-down effects of perceptual memory.
