E?a de Queiroz once wrote that his novels would never attain interna tional renown because he wrote in a language ? Portuguese ? which was a slang between two peoples ? the Portuguese and the Brazilians. For many years, his prophecy proved quite accurate. In the English-speaking world, he was a complete literary unknown until the 1950s, when trans lations of his works appeared. Twen tieth-century Luzo-Brazilian poets faced a similar fate. However, owing to the growing international interest in Brazil, the new popularity of bilingual editions and several dedicated propo nents of Luso-Brazilian culture, the best Portuguese and Brazilian poetry of the last fifty years is now available in English. In 1971 a bilingual edition of selected poems of Fernando Pessoa appeared and in 1972 a bilingual an thology of Brazilian poetry since 1922 was published.
