Inter-Urban and Regional Transport

9

TL;DRAbstract

This chapter focuses on Inter-urban and regional transport (IURT). It describes how IURT is undeniably complex and necessarily flexible, and as such eludes simple definition. IURT varies on several dimensions: distance and scale, socio-economic and political-territorial settings, transport modes and markets, and travel and trip motivations. Its bound lie somewhat imprecisely between transport that is evidently local in terms of physical distance (commuting, intra-urban and intra-metropolitan movements and many rural journeys, typically with daily frequency) and long-range jurisdictional, not less in Europe. Transport infrastructure and many services cross intra- and international borders, so demanding administrative and political cooperation which is, understandably, sometimes difficult to achieve. This chapter considers IURT in the context of the region before moving on to explore selected IURT themes and modes, namely high-speed rail (HSR) systems and Trans-European Transport Network
