TL;DRAbstract

The main energy source, fossil fuel, is fast running out. Ethanol produced from cellulosic waste materials is gaining attention. The cellulosic material is the most abundant source of organic matter. These materials are cheap and their availability makes them superior compared to other raw materials. The cellulose must be hydrolysed to glucose before it can be fermented to ethanol. The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose using cellulase enzymes is the most widely used method. The production cost of cellulase enzymes is the major cost in ethanol manufacture. In order to make cellulosic ethanol more attractive, enzyme stability needs to be improved. The stability and reusability of the enzymes can be improved through enzyme immobilization. In enzyme immobilization, it is important to maintain the activity of the enzymes. Another issue of concern in enzyme immobilization is the leaching of the enzymes during the process, which relates to the reusability of the enzymes. It is thus important
