Word Origins in the Reference Course: TEACHING DICTIONARY USE

0

TL;DRAbstract

A multipurpose assignment that I give early in the introductory reference course involves a simple list of about twenty-five words and the use of an unabridged dictionary. The purposes are three: (1) to promote a better understanding of types of reference books; (2) to introduce The New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (or its reprint, The Oxford English Dictionary) to students who usually have never heard of it; and (3) to develop an appreciation for etymological studies. I shall discuss these in reverse order, with emphasis on the first of the three purposes named.
