INSPECTION RELIABILITY FOR CRACK DETECTION AND SIZING

0

TL;DRAbstract

Fatigue cracking is possible in Offshore Structures and in consequence is taken into account in design and during service. The nature of this cracking is such that crack depth is the key parameter; hence the need for sizing surface breaking flaws located at the weld tow. As a result, NDT, used for underwater in-service inspection of offshore platforms, is needed for both detection and sizing. Safety assessment relies on the information from this inspection. Thus it is important to know the reliability of in-service inspection data. Recent trials have been conducted at UCL to determine inspection reliability for underwater detection and sizing. This work will be described in this paper.
