Teaching and training OTDs in the ED: Challenges, opportunities and solutions

Overseas trained doctors (OTDs) play an essential role in service provision in Australian public hospitals, and bring a wealth of diverse experience to a hospital. Most regional emergency departments and an increasing number of urban departments are reliant upon OTDs for staffing. A number of recent high profile cases have drawn considerable public and regulatory attention to this group of doctors. Increased numbers of OTDs are coming fromnon-traditional regions with different health systems to Australia, such as Africa, China, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This leads to challenges for supervising clinicians who need to invest considerable resources to orientate and train such doctors. The entry point for many OTDs wishing to obtain full registration in Australia is presently the AMC clinical exam. However, emergency medicine is underrepresented in this process despite the successfulcompletion of a term in emergency medicine being a requirement for registration with all medical b
