Endocrine Function in Normal and Agalactic Sows

W. C. Wagner-1972-02-01-Journal of Animal Science

TL;DRAbstract

Plasma corticoid response following ACTH treatment, thyroid cell height, adrenal gland cortisol content and gross weight of the ovaries, anterior pituitary, thyroid and adrenal were studied in 26 agalactic, 17 normal lactating and seven non-pregnant cyclic sows. Significant changes observed were increased thyroid cell height in normal lactating sows and larger ovaries in cyclic sows. There was a wide variation in the corticoid response to 0.3 U ACTH/Kg body weight within each of the three groups. Some of the variation seemed to be related to the environmental and/or genetic background of the pig.
