Dysphagia Secondary to Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (P4.162)

TL;DRAbstract

OBJECTIVE: To recognize diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) also known as Forestier disease as a cause of dysphagia. BACKGROUND: DISH is generally a benign disease of unknown etiology and is found in 3.8[percnt] of males and 2.6[percnt] of females over the age of 40 [1]. Thoracic involvement occurs in 99[percnt] of cases. Cervical involvement, particularly of C4-7, is less common (75[percnt]). Dysphagia due to DISH involving the cervical spine is relatively unusual (17[percnt] of patients with DISH) [2]. DISH is characterized by calcification and ossification of anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine and various extra-spinal ligaments. The etiology of DISH is unknown. Positive associations include diabetes, obesity, hypertension, gout and Dupuytrens contractures [2].
