Neural Mechanisms of Visual Attention

TL;DRAbstract

One model of the neural substrates of attention is the divisive normalisation model, where attentional modulation effects that result in neuronal spiking rate changes are described as competitive interactions. Another model that also describes the neural substrates of attention focuses on the role of increased strength in gamma-band oscillations. Although these two models are not mutually exclusive, little effort has been put into integrating these frameworks. This thesis aims to provide that integration after first discussing these two models in-depth. The resulting integrated model of attention is falsifiable and provides a more comprehensive framework that allows novel questions on the topic of attention to be formulated and addressed.
