Why individuals become terrorists or radicalised from a policing perspective

Adnan I. Qureshi-2012-01-01-UPT. Syiah Kuala University Library (Syiah Kuala University)

TL;DRAbstract

Why people become radicalised or terrorists is examined from a policing perspective. The recurrent issue of adequately defining terrorism is discussed with details as to why it is so important. There are a variety of paths to radicalisation, mainly social networks supported by other vehicles including religion and ideology, with resentment towards Western foreign policy seen as a causational factor. Terrorists and radicalised persons are neither crazy nor evil but are psychologically normal (if deeply misguided); therefore engagement and dialogue are crucial if we are to understand concomitant reasons and actions. Government initiatives to counter radicalisation have not been welcomed by the community as they have been ill considered and ultimately have not had the desired impact.
