TL;DRAbstract
An ETL 25-Mev betatron was designed and constructed as a standard source of high energy x-rays and electrons and was operated with success. Formulas that represent relations among factors for economical design of a betatron magnet, such as the energy of electron, equilibrium orbit, weight of magnet, cross sectton of accelerating tube, ampere-turns, capacity of resonant condenser, kind of silicon steel sheet and price of construction, a general principle in designing a betatron magnet, and the structure of the magnet and its energizing system are presented. Main constants of the magnet are as follows: the total weight of the manget and coils, 3 tons; the radius of equilibrium orbit, 17.8 cm; the total capacitor storage under full power, 910 kva; and the air gap between the pole pieces at r/sub o/ = 17.8 cm, 7.8 cm.
