TL;DRAbstract
Abstract This chapter considers the state of knowledge on the deterrent effects of imprisonment, first laying out Gary Becker's so-called "baseline" economic model of crime. The Beckerian model provides a framework for the discussion of empirics. The chapter then reviews the literature and its implications, and concludes with an assessment of policy implications and directions for future research, including expansion of the baseline model.
