TL;DRAbstract
A blast furnace is a plant where pig iron is produced from ore, see fig. 1. This is the first stage in the liquid metal phase. The lower part of the furnace, the so-called “hearth”, forms a reservoir for the iron. The inner side consists of refractory material. It protects the steel shell outside the furnace against the high temperature of iron of about 1500°C.
