TL;DRAbstract
The method of test for grain-size analysis of soils, ASTM Tentative Method D 422, was extensively revised in 1954. The technique was originally developed by the Bureau of Public Roads (1) following the suggested use of an hydrometer by George Bouyoucos in 1927 (2). The ASTM first published a tentative method of test covering this procedure in 1935. Following some changes in 1938 the method was adopted as ASTM standard in 1939. Two revisions that were more or less editorial in nature were included in the standard in 1951. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the changes that were made in 1954.
