TL;DRAbstract

Aerodynamics playa key role in all high speed sports including cycling, skiing, bobsleigh, sprint and speed skating as these competitions usually involves very short winning time margins. An aerodynamically efficient sport gears and athlete's body positions are fundamental to achieve desired outcome in competitive speed sports. In cycling (both time trial and road racing), the aerodynamic optimization is paramount. However, a standard full scale testing methodology for aerodynamic evaluation of the cyclist along with all gears (bicycle, cycling suit, helmet, shoes, goggle, etc.) is not well developed and calibrated. This paper describes a development of a full scale testing methodology for aerodynamic measurements of drag, lift and side forces as a function of cyclist's body positions along with various gears under a range of wind speeds. The experimental fmdings indicate that the developed full scale testing methodology can be used for the optimization of cycling aer
