Application of Drainage Simulation Models

R. W. Skaggs,G. M. Chescheir-1999-01-12-Agronomy monograph/Agronomy

TL;DRAbstract

This chapter demonstrates the application of drainage simulation models. Models are being applied by engineers and soil scientists to analyze the performance of drainage and related water management systems. The yield predicted for the medium drainage intensity was only 2% smaller, with one-half the drainage intensity. Benefits of fitting drainage system design to soil and site parameters are demonstrated by results of a study of a poorly drained North Carolina soil series. DRAINMOD was used to determine drainage criteria for corn in eastern North Carolina. Detailed evaluation of the year-by-year simulations showed that controlled drainage reduced predicted nitrate nitrogen losses in every year with the largest reductions occurring in years with the greatest drainage outflows. J. J. B. Bronswijk et al. used the model SMASS to evaluate effectiveness of alternative drainage/water management strategies for removing pyrite and improving yields on potential acid sulfate soils in the Baramba
