Research is essential to understand and monitor trafficking in persons. This article provides methodological suggestions (focused on definitions, sources and research techniques) to start a research on human trafficking and sexual exploitation. We focus on the key people involved: sex workers, exploiters and customers, with an emphasis on immigrant people. Special attention is dedicated to customers, often marginally investigated.
