TL;DRAbstract
This study is examines some of the most notable features of early modern rural life in the Vale of York, especially the complex relationship between its people and its landscape. This analysis, which makes extensive use of manorial court records, reveals the many ways in which land was shared and managed by the community, and how these uses and practices changed over the course of three centuries. Overall, this study shows the uniqueness of this region, the efforts of its inhabitants to control their environment, and the continual changes experienced by the Vale during a transformative period in English history.
