Like-spaces versus Bailiwick Approaches to the Design of Health Care Facilities The design of a health care facility reflects, among other things, how it is used and how it is organized.Use and organization change with time, often in unpredictable ways, so it is natural, even essential, to try to design flexibility into the physical plant.Like motherhood, "flexibility" has an aura of noncontroversial goodness, but we seem not to have nearly enough of it.Why are most hospital buildings so lacking in adaptability?Flexibility at the level of movable partitions or multiplicity of access points to pipes and wires is usually introduced at a point when the existing and contemplated organization of the institution has already strongly influenced the design.This kind of flexibility, however helpful, is superficial and in the long run weak.Approaches that provide pervasive and persistent adaptability of physical plant must start at the very beginning of the design process.Two principal approache
