TL;DRAbstract

This chapter uses Estonia as a case study in examining the relationship between national heritage and tourism in transition economies. It is suggested that it is something of a paradox that Estonians, in the period after regaining independence, having used 'heritage' as a tool of national liberation, should be content to permit the 'commodification' of aspects of their heritage as part of the agendas of foreign tour operators, and to allow aspects of their national identity to be consumer-driven by the demands of international tourism.
