TL;DRAbstract

The major soil resource appraisals in the USA are the National Cooperative Soil Survey and the National Resources Inventory (NRI). The NRI was conducted by Soil Conservation Service in 1977 and again in 1982. It provides information on the status, condition, and trends of soil erosion, land use, and many related natural resources issues. Soil surveys delineate landscape areas that have similar soils, slope, erosion, and expected responses to management. A Major Land Resource Areas (MLRA) is a geographically associated group of smaller areas called resource units. Data and maps for MLRAs can be associated with other information for planning and monitoring land use and conservation programs. The land capability classification system rates the degree of restrictions in the use of soils for most cultivated crops and pasture plants. The worldwide soil resource inventory is only about one-fourth completed at a level of detail adequate for analysis of productivity potential.
