TL;DRAbstract

OVERWINTERING PEZOTHRIPS KELLYANUS (BAGNALL) FOUND ON VIBURNUM IN SOUTHERN ITALY (THYSANOPTERA THRIPIDAE) Both adults and neanides of this and other thrips were collected from half-December to March-end in 3 suburban localities of Bari province (Apulia, southern Italy); they were selected in the laboratory from samples of Viburnum tinus L. inflorescences (Caprifoliaceae). Second-instar neanides were identified from adults emerged in jars. P. kellyanus first-instar neanides were obtained from eggs discharged in tubes with jasmine leaves by females collected in February. Taxonomical directions are given to separate neanides of P. kellyanus from those of other 3 species occurring on flowering Viburnum as well: Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché), Thrips major Uzel and T. tabaci Lindeman. The comparative study includes also the neanides of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), as this thrips does usually occur in Citrus plantations of southern Italy together with P. kellyanus.
