TL;DRAbstract

Arterial hypertension is a growing health problem even among adolescents. It seems necessary better to understand the underlying causes. The aim of our study was to test the hypothesis, that in adolescents elevated blood pressure is linked to a reduced health related quality of life. The analysis was based on data collected by the nationwide German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS). With a total of 7688 children and adolescents aged 11 to 17 years, standardized measurements of blood pressure and quality of life using the “Kinder-Lebensqualitätsfragebogen” (KINDL-R) and the “Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire” (SDQ) were realized. Participants with an elevated blood pressure were more often obese and reported an unhealthy lifestyle.
