TL;DRAbstract

The generic role of standards in the development and diffusion of technology is reviewed. Examples of the economic value to the semiconductor industry of standards and the metrological research that underlies them are given to show the substantial return on investment that usually is obtained. Current metrological issues are raised to show that the present level of effort in standards development in this field is not sufficient and is cause for serious concern.
